Abi Mali

Age: 29

Hometown: Lusaka

When did you start singing? From as early as I can remember. I was somewhere between the ages of ¾. Mostly at Sunday school. I remember my parents saying, “you’re an amazing singer, you’re going to go far”.

Inspiration: just watching other artists perform on stage. The chills it gave me, I always said I want to do that. I grew up with my grandparents and they always said I can’t just do that. My grandmother played piano so I enjoyed that experience.

Have you ever performed before? If so, where? Apart from singing in church, I’ve also been a backup vocalist for Pompi for almost 4 years and I backed Abel Chungu and Mag 44. I’ve always wanted to step out on my own but I was too scared. I always wanted a crutch so we started a duet with another Pompi backup artist “Flow 1 NE” and that lasted almost 2 years and that didn’t work.

What will you do with the prize money if you win Dreams? I’m going to put a chunk of it away I recently realized that saving is the best way. I have a 6 years old daughter and I have to make sure she’s set for school fees, I’m a single mom so it’s really tough. Always wanted to take her away on holiday, just the two of us. Also pursue something related to fashion and/or makeup cosmetology.

What makes you the best person to win Dreams? I’m very open to any challenge. I’m ready to be stretched. You need to have confidence and want this enough but when I came here and saw the talent, I saw that I’m not even at the top. I’ve never doubted myself so much. I’m willing to be stretched and pulled in any direction. I have a story to tell, I went through something and music saved my life. People don’t have that – so many people don’t have that so I want to reach out to such people.

One word to describe how you feel right now: Scared.
